Driveways & Grand Entrances

Long rural driveways and sweeping property entrances designed and built for the Mornington Peninsula. Every detail from sub-base to gravel considered.

DRIVEWAYS & GRAND ENTRANCES

The first impression lasts.

On a Peninsula rural property, the driveway is not a minor detail. It can stretch for hundreds of metres across open land and sets the entire tone for the property before a visitor reaches the front door. Done well, a long gravel driveway is one of the most striking features a property can have. Done poorly, it becomes an ongoing maintenance problem and a source of frustration through every wet winter.

NJR Landscapes specialises in long rural driveways and grand property entrances. We have built entries across some of the Peninsula's finest acreage properties and understand what it takes to create an approach that looks exceptional, functions reliably and holds up to the conditions the Peninsula delivers.

Our driveway work is not simply about spreading gravel. It begins with a thorough assessment of the existing ground conditions, understanding how water moves across and beneath the site and designing a sub-base and drainage solution that will support the surface above it for years to come. We then select gravel in consultation with you, considering colour, texture, drainage performance and suitability for your specific site.

The result is a driveway that arrives looking deliberate and well-considered, and stays that way with minimal intervention.

Everything your driveway project requires.

WHAT IS INCLUDED

Our driveway and entrance service covers the full scope of work from ground assessment and sub-base preparation through to gravel installation, edging and feature planting.

01

Long Rural & Estate Driveways

Peninsula acreage properties often have driveways that cover significant distances across varying terrain. We have the machinery and experience to work at this scale, managing levels, drainage and material placement across long runs efficiently and accurately. Whether you are creating a new driveway from scratch or rehabilitating an existing one, we bring the full capability to deliver it.

02

Grand Entrances & Gate Surrounds

The entrance to a property is its signature moment. We design and construct formal entrance treatments that frame the beginning of the driveway with intent, whether through pillared gate posts, feature stone, structured planting or a combination. A considered entrance elevates the entire property and creates an arrival experience that reflects its quality.

03

Sub-Base Preparation & Compaction

The longevity of any gravel driveway is determined almost entirely by what sits beneath the gravel. We excavate to the appropriate depth, lay and compact a crushed rock or road base sub-base and ensure the surface is correctly crowned for water runoff before any gravel is placed. This step is what separates a driveway that holds its shape for a decade from one that ruts and shifts within a season.

04

Drainage & Culvert Installation

Water management is critical on Peninsula driveways, particularly those crossing low points or running alongside significant slopes. We design and install appropriate drainage, including agricultural drains alongside the driveway, cross-drain culverts at low points and surface drainage channels where needed, to ensure water moves away from the driving surface efficiently.

05

Gravel Selection, Supply & Installation

Not all gravel is the same and the right choice depends on your soil type, the volume of traffic and the aesthetic you want to achieve. We advise on gravel specification, source material from quality suppliers and install it to the correct depth and profile. We also supply and install decorative top-course gravels where a premium finish is required for entrance areas.

06

Edge Definition & Kerbing

A well-defined edge gives a driveway a finished, deliberate appearance and significantly reduces maintenance over time by containing the gravel and preventing grass from encroaching onto the surface. We install a range of edge treatments from simple timber or steel edging through to more substantial stone or concrete kerbing appropriate to the scale of the driveway.

07

Feature Planting & Avenue Trees

Some of the most memorable Peninsula driveways are defined as much by their planting as their surface. Avenue trees planted along a long driveway create a sense of arrival that is unmatched by any other landscape element. We advise on species selection for Peninsula conditions, source advanced specimens and install them at spacings and depths that ensure long-term success.

08

Ongoing Maintenance & Topping

Gravel driveways require periodic maintenance to keep them performing and looking their best. We offer maintenance services including gravel topping, regrading of rutted sections, drainage clearance and edge reinstatement. Establishing a regular maintenance schedule extends the life of your driveway significantly and avoids the cost of more substantial remediation work.

Built to last. Not just to look good.

WHY NJR LANDSCAPES

A driveway that looks impressive on the day it is finished but deteriorates within two seasons is a false economy. The difference between a driveway that holds its shape for a decade and one that ruts and shifts within a year comes down almost entirely to what happens before the gravel arrives. Sub-base depth, compaction, drainage and material specification are where the real work is done.

When earthworks and landscaping are managed by the same team, the two phases are designed to work together from the beginning. Drainage is positioned for the garden. Levels are set for the hard landscaping. The transition between phases is seamless and accountable.

Sub-base and drainage expertise

The longevity of any gravel driveway is determined by what sits beneath it. We specify and install sub-base and drainage solutions that keep your driveway performing through Peninsula winters year after year.

Owned excavation machinery

Our excavators and tip-truck handle all groundworks and material movement on site. No subcontractors, no coordination delays and no additional margin built into your quote.

Peninsula gravel knowledge

We know the gravel products available to Peninsula properties, their performance characteristics, their colours and which suits which application. That knowledge means better advice and a better result.

Integrated entrance design

Driveways do not exist in isolation. We design entrances that work with your property's architecture, existing landscape and overall aesthetic, incorporating planting and structural elements where appropriate.

Frequently asked.

COMMON QUESTIONS

  • Gravel depth and volume depend on the driveway length, width, existing ground conditions and the sub-base specification used. We calculate material requirements accurately at the quoting stage and factor in appropriate wastage. As a general guide, a correctly prepared rural driveway requires a minimum of 100mm of compacted sub-base and 75 to 100mm of gravel topping on stable ground.

  • On a properly prepared sub-base with good drainage, a gravel driveway typically needs topping every three to five years depending on traffic volume, whether vehicles turn or brake sharply in specific areas and how wet the winters have been. We can assess your driveway and recommend a maintenance schedule appropriate to your specific conditions.

  • Yes. We offer a range of gravel products in different colours and textures and can advise on which best complements your property, existing materials and surrounding landscape. For premium entrance areas, we can source decorative crushed stone products that sit alongside more utilitarian base gravels used on the main run of the driveway.
