Retaining Walls
Retaining Walls
Engineered to hold, designed to belong. NJR Landscapes builds retaining walls that solve real structural challenges while adding permanence and character to the landscape.
RETAINING WALLS
Walls that work and endure.
On a Mornington Peninsula property with any meaningful slope, a retaining wall is often the single most structurally significant element in the landscape. It defines how the land is used, where the garden can be established and how water moves across the site. A wall that fails disrupts everything around it. A wall that looks out of place undermines the entire property aesthetic.
At NJR Landscapes, we approach retaining walls as both a structural and a design problem. The engineering must be right. The wall must hold the load placed on it, manage the water behind it and remain structurally sound through the freeze and thaw cycles and the saturated soils that Peninsula winters regularly produce. But the wall also needs to look like it belongs.
We build retaining walls in a range of materials and styles, from natural dry-stone and dressed stone walls through to timber sleeper construction and concrete block or modular systems, selecting the approach that best suits the structural demands, the budget and the design intent of each individual project.
Every wall we build includes appropriate drainage behind it. Hydrostatic pressure from water trapped behind a wall is one of the primary causes of retaining wall failure, and it is entirely preventable. We do not cut corners on sub-surface drainage, regardless of the wall type or height.
Every retaining wall capability.
WHAT IS INCLUDED
Our retaining wall service covers the full scope of work from structural assessment and material selection through to drainage installation, construction and integrated planting.
Natural Stone & Dry-Stone Walling
Natural stone walls are the most enduring and characterful retaining structures available. Well-built dry-stone walls have stood on Peninsula properties for over a century and, when constructed correctly, require almost no maintenance. We source locally appropriate stone and build walls that integrate with the landscape naturally, giving properties a sense of permanence and quality that no manufactured product can replicate.
Timber Sleeper Retaining Walls
Hardwood sleeper walls remain one of the most versatile and cost-effective retaining solutions for residential and rural properties. We use quality hardwood or recycled timber sleepers appropriate to the application, cutting and setting them accurately to create clean, well-proportioned walls that suit both contemporary and traditional property styles.
Concrete Block & Modular Systems
For larger walls or projects where a consistent, engineered solution is required, concrete block and modular retaining systems provide reliable structural performance. We work with a range of quality products and can advise on the most appropriate system for your wall height, load and aesthetic requirements.
Terracing & Tiered Garden Construction
On steeply sloping sites, a series of tiered retaining walls creates usable flat areas for planting, lawn or outdoor living that would otherwise be impossible. We design and construct terraced landscapes that step down the slope in a considered, proportionate way, creating garden spaces on difficult sites and turning a challenging slope into one of the property's most interesting features.
Sub-Surface Drainage & Backfill
Every retaining wall we build includes engineered drainage behind the wall face. This typically involves a gravel drainage blanket, an agricultural drain pipe at the base and weep holes or drainage outlets through the wall at appropriate intervals. Correct backfill material is specified and placed to minimise lateral pressure on the wall and encourage water to move to the drainage system efficiently.
Integrated Planting Pockets
Walls do not need to be bare structures. Planting pockets, crevice planting and cascading plants softened along the top and face of a wall can transform a purely structural element into one of the garden's most attractive features. We design and build walls with planting in mind from the start, incorporating pockets and ledges where appropriate and advising on suitable species for each position.
Steps, Pathways & Access Integration
A retaining wall often creates a change in level that requires steps or a pathway to navigate comfortably. We design and build steps and pathways integrated with the retaining structure, using complementary materials that tie the levels together visually and create intuitive, safe access between them.
Structural Engineering Coordination
For walls above a certain height or in locations where the consequences of failure would be significant, engineering certification may be required. We coordinate with appropriate structural engineers where needed, ensuring that walls are designed and built to the required standard and that documentation is in place for council requirements or future property transactions.
Structure and design. One team.
WHY NJR LANDSCAPES
A retaining wall is not simply a construction task. It requires an understanding of the structural forces involved, the drainage behaviour of the site and the visual outcome required. NJR Landscapes brings all three to every retaining wall project, which is why our walls look right and hold long-term.
Our owned excavation machinery means we handle all groundworks for wall construction ourselves. Footing excavation, backfill compaction and drainage installation are all managed by the same team building the wall, which means better coordination, tighter sequencing and a more reliable result.
Drainage on every wall
Hydrostatic pressure is the primary cause of retaining wall failure. We specify and install sub-surface drainage behind every wall we build, regardless of height or material type.
Material expertise
We work across natural stone, timber sleeper and concrete block systems and advise on the most appropriate material for your wall height, load, site conditions and aesthetic requirements.
Owned earthworks machinery
Footing excavation, backfill and drainage installation are all handled by our own machinery and crew. No subcontractors and no sequencing delays between earthworks and construction.
Integrated design capability
Walls built by NJR Landscapes are designed to work with the broader landscape. Steps, planting pockets and associated garden elements are considered from the outset, not added as afterthoughts.
Frequently asked.
COMMON QUESTIONS
-
Generally, retaining walls under one metre in height do not require a building permit in Victoria, but this varies depending on location, the load the wall is retaining and proximity to boundaries or other structures. Walls over one metre, or walls in designated areas, typically require a permit and may require engineering sign-off. We can advise based on your specific project and assist with the permit process where required.
-
The right material depends on the height and load of the wall, the aesthetic of your property, your budget and the site conditions. Natural stone suits rural and heritage properties and offers exceptional longevity. Timber sleepers are versatile and cost-effective for moderate heights. Concrete block systems are the most appropriate for taller walls or where a consistent modular appearance is preferred. We advise on material selection at the quoting stage after assessing your site.
-
The most common causes of retaining wall failure are inadequate drainage behind the wall, insufficient footing depth and the use of undersized or inappropriate materials for the load being retained. We address all three on every wall we build, specifying correct drainage, founding walls appropriately for the soil conditions and selecting materials rated for the height and load required.
