Earthworks & Site Preparation

Earthworks & Site Preparation

Precision earthmoving and site preparation for Peninsula properties of every scale. Our own excavators, tractors and tip-truck on site from day one.

EARTHWORKS & SITE PREPARATION

Ground up. Done properly.

Every great landscape begins below the surface. Before a driveway can be laid, a retaining wall built or a garden established, the ground beneath it must be properly prepared. At NJR Landscapes, earthworks is one of our core capabilities and one of the things that most clearly separates us from the typical landscaping company.

We own and operate our own excavators, tractors and tip-truck. That means when your project needs earthmoving, we do not call a subcontractor and wait. We show up with the right machinery, operated by our own experienced team, and we get it done on your schedule rather than someone else's.

Our earthworks capability covers everything from small drainage corrections on residential blocks through to bulk cut-and-fill operations on large rural properties. We have the experience to read a site accurately, understand its drainage behaviour and grade and contour land in a way that supports everything built on top of it for years to come.

Peninsula properties present particular challenges. Varying soil types, significant slopes and seasonal water movement all require careful consideration at the earthworks stage. Getting it right here means less remediation work later and a property that performs as it should through every season.

WHAT IS INCLUDED

Our earthworks service covers the full scope of site preparation work. Here is what we bring to every project, from initial clearing through to final reinstatement.

01

Bulk Earthmoving & Cut and Fill

Large-scale earthmoving requires machinery that can work efficiently across difficult terrain and large areas. Our excavators and tractors handle bulk cut-and-fill operations for new builds, property reshaping and paddock development. We assess the site carefully before any work begins, calculating volumes accurately to minimise excess spoil and keep your project within budget.

02

Site Stripping & Land Clearing

SPreparing a site for construction or landscaping often requires stripping the existing topsoil, removing vegetation and clearing the area to a clean working level. We undertake full site strip and clearing operations, stockpiling usable topsoil for later reinstatement and removing unwanted material from site using our own tip-truck.

03

Grading, Levelling & Contouring

Accurate grading is critical for both drainage performance and the visual result of any landscape. We grade and level sites to precise tolerances, creating surfaces that shed water appropriately, support turf and planting establishment and provide stable foundations for hard landscaping elements.

04

Drainage Design & Installation

Poor drainage is one of the most common causes of landscape failure on Peninsula properties. We assess existing drainage patterns, identify problem areas and design and install drainage solutions that address the root cause rather than the symptom. This includes agricultural drains, surface drains, pits and pipe systems appropriate to the site.

05

Dam Construction & Maintenance

Rural properties across the Peninsula rely on dams for stock water, irrigation and fire protection. We construct new dams and undertake desilting, bank repair and spillway work on existing structures. Our excavators are well suited to dam work and our experience with Peninsula soils means we understand how to build a dam wall that holds water reliably.

06

Soil Import, Export & Spreading

Most earthworks projects involve moving material on and off site. Our tip-truck handles both, importing quality fill or topsoil when needed and removing excess spoil without requiring external haulage contractors. This keeps your project moving and avoids the coordination delays that come with managing third-party trucks.

07

Post-Construction Site Reinstatement

Once the heavy earthworks are complete, a site often needs to be reinstated to a condition ready for landscaping. We undertake topsoil spreading, rough grading and preparation of surfaces for turf, planting or further construction, leaving a clean and ready site at every stage.

08

Site Access & Track Preparation

Rural properties frequently require improved access tracks for construction traffic, machinery movement or permanent farm use. We prepare and grade tracks using appropriate materials for the soil type and traffic load, creating access that remains functional through wet Peninsula winters.

WHY NJR LANDSCAPES

Most landscaping companies on the Mornington Peninsula subcontract their earthworks. That means delays waiting for availability, an extra margin built into your quote and a third party on your site who does not know your project. NJR Landscapes owns and operates its own plant and machinery fleet, which changes the equation entirely.

When earthworks and landscaping are managed by the same team, the two phases are designed to work together from the beginning. Drainage is positioned for the garden. Levels are set for the hard landscaping. The transition between phases is seamless and accountable.

We own our machinery

Our excavators, tractors and tip-truck are operated by our own experienced team. No subcontractors, no availability delays and no additional margin passed on to you.

Peninsula soil expertise

Over a decade working across Mornington Peninsula soils means we understand how the land behaves, where water moves and what each site needs before work begins.

Tip-truck on site

Material import and export is handled by our own tip-truck. Spoil leaves your site when we say it will and imported fill arrives on schedule, without coordinating a third party.

Integrated with landscaping

Earthworks completed by the same team doing your landscaping means no handover gaps, no miscommunication and a finished result that holds together from the ground up.

Frequently asked.

COMMON QUESTIONS

  • It depends on the scale and nature of the work. Minor earthworks associated with landscaping typically do not require a permit, while significant cut-and-fill operations, dam construction or work near waterways may need approval from the relevant authority. We can advise based on your specific project and assist with the process where required.

  • Yes, and this is one of the key advantages of working with NJR Landscapes. When the same team manages both phases, the earthworks are designed with the landscaping outcome in mind from the beginning. Drainage is positioned correctly for garden beds, levels are set for the intended hard landscaping and the transition between phases is seamless.

  • We plan machinery access routes carefully before starting any project, protecting established lawn, gardens and paving from unnecessary damage. Where access across sensitive areas is unavoidable, we use tracking mats and reinstate surfaces on completion. Our compact dingo is particularly useful for working in tighter areas without disturbing surrounding spaces.
